Reflections

Date

2021

Location

Dundee

Reflections was a true collaboration, which featured artists taking inspiration from local people’s stories and experiences of the River Tay during lockdown.

Elaine’ Maher created a digital design inspired by imagery contained in the stories and memories of local people and is based on a topographic map of the Tay and surrounding areas. The digital design was then translated into a 6.5 metre wide textile banner by artist Rhona Jack.

Textures and colour choices were guided by the fabrics available. In keeping with ScrapAntics recycling ethos and in homage to Dundee’s mill history, the whole banner is made from locally sourced materials and fabric.

The oral histories, stored by Dundee Libraries, were also the basis for Kate Tweddle’s spoken word performance. She took words and phrases from each recording and wove these together to create an evocative piece celebrating the wonderful River Tay.

The banner was hung along the side of the Discovery Ship, from 19th March - 12th April 2021.
